How to paste the shoji paper with an iron

If you have ever contemplated changing the Japanese shoji paper and you were having doubts thinking it is difficult,rest assured you can easily perform the change,all you need is an electric iron.

STEP1: Remove the old shoji paper

If the old shoji paper was applied using glue, wet a piece of cloth with water and apply lightly on the surface of the paper, wait for about 5 minutes and then peel it off. If the old shoji paper was applied using an electric iron , peel of while apply ing the iron, peel off the paper while it is hot. Make sure there is no remains of the old paper.

After removing the old shoji paper, clean the wooden frame properly.
If the wooden frame is wet make sure it is dry.
Set the electric iron to medium heat (Dry). Some types of shoji paper require the iron set to High heat so it is nice to read the shoji paper instruction manual well.

After positioning the paper, apply the tip of the iron to 2 or 3 spots to temporary affix the paper to the frame.Spread the shoji paper while making sure the paper is parallel with the frame and apply the tip of the iron to the other end and temporary affix it to the frame, making sure there is no slacken portion.

Next, gently apply the iron from the center of the frame to the periphery to glue the paper to the frame. Becareful, moving the iron fast or strongly might lead to the creation of wrinkles.

As shown in the picture, if the Edge is in the inner part of the frame as seen in the picture, make sure to apply the iron on the spots that the paper was temporarily affixed and while it is still hot remove the paper. After removing the paper, apply the corner of the iron and paste along. After than carefully paste round the frame.

STEP3: Cut the excess paper

Leave about 1cm around the periphery of the of the frame, cut any excess paper. If the frame has an edge, cut along the edge. After cutting apply the iron and remove the excess paper while it is hot. Apply the iron one more time around the entire frame.
